Battery Charge light

PKD Auto Electrical the experts in Fixing your auto electrical faults.

Do you need,

a Auto Electrician to repair, service or replace the battery system on your vehicle?

If your vehicles Battery or Charge indicator light is on in the dashboard you should have your vehicle checked as soon as possible. The light is a warning the level of power in the battery or the level of charge reaching the battery is insufficient. If left unattended this will deplete all power from the battery and the vehicle will cease to operate.

About the battery system on your vehicle

Your vehicles battery can run down for any of several reasons:

  • You accidentally left the lights on or some other accessory that pulls power from the battery even when the ignition key is off.
  • The battery is not being recharged while the vehicle is being driven (you have a charging problem).
  • There is a key off parasitic electrical drain on the battery because a relay is sticking, a module is not shutting down, or there is a shorted diode in the alternator.
  • Your battery is old and will not hold a charge anymore.

A fully charged battery should read about 12.6 volts. If the battery reads 12.4 volts or less, it is low (discharged) and needs to be recharged.

Battery Voltage and State of Charge:

  • 12.68v . . . . . . . . . . 100%
  • 12.45v . . . . . . . . . . 75%
  • 12.24v . . . . . . . . . . 50%
  • 12.06v . . . . . . . . . . 25%
  • 11.89v . . . . . . . . . . 0%

NOTE: These readings are at 27 degrees C.

Battery voltage readings will drop with temperature roughly 0.01 volts for every 3 degrees C.

How to avoid a flat or dead battery

  •   Don't leave lights or accessories on.
  •   Drive your vehicle regularly to prevent it from losing its state of charge.
  •   Try to take a steady 1hour drive each week.
  •   Have the charge rate of your battery checked at every service.
  •   Keep your battery case clean.
  •   Inspect the battery terminals regularly to ensure they haven't loosened during driving vibration.

Vehicle Battery Safety Tips

  • Keep flames or sparks away from the battery at all times.
  • Metallic objects should not be placed on top of the battery.
  • Batteries should always be installed by a qualified professional.
